The
Chair: No other type of furniture offers the same possibilities
of making and facilitating connections. Because of this, more
effort have been invested in the creation of chairs than any
other type of furniture. The chair is one of the most designed,
studied, written about and celebrated icons of the modern era.

EJ 100 Oxchair
Design: Hans J. Wegner
The Ox-chair from 1960, padded,
covered with oxhide and as strong and distinctive as a bull, but
raised off the floor by light but strong legs in chromium-plated
steel, is another chair without parentage - and one that has
become an image and an archetype. Among the jobs it does, and
one that lies close to Wegner's heart, is to make it possible to
sit comfortably in many different ways so that one can change
position continuously. Only then can one sit really comfortably.
It is Wegner's own favorite chair at home, in his
100-square-metre living room and clearly a chair that needs
space around it.

Today Oxchair stands as a
sculptural manifestation of the very best which Danish furniture
has to offer. The result is an organic upholstered piece of
furniture that presents itself to the beholder as if formed from
one single block. The prolonged back has clear references to
living creatures and gives Oxchair the masculinity and
suppleness of an ox. Combined with the elegant steel frame and
the soft surface it makes a good and balanced expression. With
its slightly reclined back Oxchair is the ideal furniture for
relaxation and absorption.
Because of Hans J. Wegner’s inspiration by Picasso a.o. the
design of this sculptural and masculin chair has placed it among
the classics in Danish Furniture design.
First produced in 1960 the chair was, however, too advanced for
the early 60’s and production was stopped in 1962.
The chair was not produced again until 1985 when Erik Jørgensen
Møbelfabrik A/S took up the chair in their collection. The
Oxchair has won many prestigious awards and has been exhibited
all over the world.
